Correspondence, account books, land lease and sale documents, maps, plans, photographs, illuminated addresses, painting, and miscellaneous pieces. Records relate mainly to land surface development and coalmining, at Burwood Estate (Merewether) and Rothbury region. Includes private papers of Dr. James Mitchell, David Scott Mitchell, Edward Christopher Merewether and several of his descendants. Of special interest are: E.C. Merewether's records relating to his work as Commissioner for Crown Lands in the McLeay River District, 1848-1854, and as agent for the N.S.W. Government in London negotiating steam postal communication via Panama, 1859; also records compiled by E.C. Merewether and D.S. Mitchell in 1869 when the family successfully contested Dr. Mitchell's last will nominating William Ernest Wolfskehl as trustee. The Scott Family, who were closely associated with the Mitchells, have incidental reference. Another subsidiary theme of interest is the payment to the Trustees of the Public Library of N.S.W. of £70,000 bequeathed by D.S. Mitchell. The painting is a portrait of D.S. Mitchell by Herbert Beecroft from a photograph taken in 1870.
